
PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla.- Amai Martinez of Kangaroo Court Roos 14U throws a complete six inning shutout to help his team cruise past La Mirada Toreros 8-0.
With the victory, the Roos move to 3-0 at the 14U National Team Championships in Florida and put themselves in a comfortable spot for the third round.
After a scoreless first inning from both teams, the Roos struck first in Friday's contest, scoring one run in the bottom of the second to gain the 1-0 lead. They extended their lead in the fourth putting up three runs on three hits. The inning started with a pair of singles with a runner advancing to third. A fly out plated the first run, while a double followed by a sacrifice fly brought the lead to 4-0.
The Roos added three more runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. A single by Cade Kurland brought Renzo Gonzales to third, who made it to first on a walk. Martinez smoked a sacrifice fly to bring home the first run of the frame. A series of errors and a single then scored two more.
One more run was added in the bottom of the sixth to enforce the mercy rule. A walk and a double plated the final run and the game ended 8-0 in six innings.
Amai Martinez highlighted the offense in today's Game of the Day contest for the Roos. Martinez went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and zero strikeouts. For the Toreros, Darian Choi was 2-for-3 with no strikeouts.
Martinez also earned the win on the bump and pitched a gem. He hurled all six innings, allowing no runs on five hits with three strikeouts and zero walks. Cortez Amador was given the loss, throwing four innings and allowing four runs on five hits.
The Roos will face Houston Athletics Black next in hopes to extend their undefeated streak here at the National Team Championships in Florida.
