PHOENIX — Jackson Cox and Chase Marshall tossed a combined three-hit shutout as Trosky National Scout 2022 earned its second win at the 2021 17U National Team Championships Arizona with a 4-0 victory against PFA Matadors.
Cox, who struck out 11 across five innings of work, surrendered just one hit on a one-out double from Daniel Garate in the opening frame. The right-handed Oregon commit retired 13 consecutive batters between the first and fifth innings, which included a string of four consecutive strikeouts. He punctuated his standout performance by striking out the side in the fourth inning and earned his first win of the tournament.
Trosky jumped on the board in the opening frame when Jose Vargas delivered a run-scoring single to center. A steal of home by Ely Kennel with a runner in a pickle between first and second extended the lead to 2-0 later in the inning.
Ryan Spier doubled home a run in the fourth to put Trosky ahead 3-0 and the Kennel came across to score the team's final run of the game via an error in the fifth.
PFA Matadors put the potential tying run in the on-deck circle in the seventh after Angelo Aleman recorded a two-out walk and Isaac Ton delivered a textbook bunt single, but Trosky right-hander Chase Marshall, a Washington commit, induced a soft fly ball to end the threat and the game.
Aaron Petersen battled through three innings of work for PFA Matadors and struck out three, but suffered the loss.
Trosky National Scout 2022 (2-2) improved to .500 at the National Team Championships and will await its next opponent in bracket play (TBD).
PFA Matadors (1-3) will await its next opponent (TBD) in bracket play, as well.
