14U Champs NC Day Two Roundup

The 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina continued on July 7 at the National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. Follow along to stay up to date on all the day two action!

ZT PROSPECTS 4, WOW FACTOR NATIONAL 0

Broder Katke went 2-for-3 with a single, double, and two RBIs to lead ZT Prospects National (2-0) to a 4-0 victory over Wow Factor National (0-2) in the second round of pool play at the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

ZT Prospects jumped out to an early lead in the second thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Angel Acuna which plated a run from third. Another run went up on the board for ZT Prospects in the third after Katke singled to center and drove in a runner from third and established the 2-0 lead. Katke and Joshua Priest recorded back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth that provided a 4-0 lead for ZT Prospects. Jaeden Estevez threw the first six innings for ZT Prospects and Beckett Berg closed the door in the seventh to secure the shutout victory.

In addition to an RBI double, Priest added a single and a run scored for ZT Prospects. His teammate Enrique Lopez contributed to the ZT offense with a double. Blake Lundy and Bryan Ravelo each went 1-for-2 with a base hit for Wow Factor.

ZT Prospects National will continue day two action at the 14U National Team Championships as it faces Dulin Dodgers Prime at 10:45 a.m. on Coleman Field. Wow Factor National returns to action against Kangaroo Court Roos American at 10:45 a.m. on Field 2. TEAM ELITE 3, TOP TIER 0

Mason Diamond went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two singles to lead Team Elite (1-1) to a 3-0 victory over Top Tier Select (1-1) in pool play of the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

Defensive miscues by Top Tier ultimately led to Team’s Elite’s three runs in the contest. An error made in the fourth would allow Teagan Scott and Case Martin to reach home and put Team Elite up 2-0. Austin Neese reached base on an error in the sixth, followed by a line drive from Diamond to pick up an RBI single and extend the lead to 3-0 and take the win over Top Tier.

Scott was also stout at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and a single. Team Elite starting pitcher Grayson McCarthy (1-0) pitched 6.1 innings of two-hit baseball to pick up the victory, striking out six batters and allowing zero runs. Sam Godbout came on in the seventh inning to put two away and finish out the game.

Matthew Cook (0-1) was credited with the loss for Top Tier after giving up three unearned runs in 5.2 innings pitched.

Both teams will conclude pool play today with Team Elite facing Dirtbags National 14U at 11:00 a.m. on Field 3. Top Tier Select will match up against 2027 Texas Twelve at 11:00 a.m. on Field 4. Both games will be streamed on USABaseball.TV and live tweeted @USABScores on Twitter.

DIRTBAGS NATIONAL 14U 7, 2027 TEXAS TWELVE 0

Dirtbags National 14U (1-1) tossed a shutout behind Zachary Grogan’s 6.0 dominant innings in an impressive 7-0 win over 2027 Texas Twelve (0-1-1) at the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

Despite no action after three innings, Dirtbags National jumped to a 3-0 lead in the home half of the fourth. Carter Beck lit the spark for the home team with a stand-up double to deep left center. Three consecutive singles kept the pressure on Texas Twelve, as Caleb Lynn and Kaden Parker earned an RBI apiece. A double steal committed by the Dirtbags allowed Holt Gaston to score from third. Dirtbags National blew it open in the sixth after a bases-loaded RBI single by Gaston; Cooper Partin then added on two of his own with a single to left to make it 6-0. A wild pitch allowed Parker to trot home and tack on the seventh run.

Grogan dominated the bump for Dirtbags from the get-go, shutting down Texas Twelve in 6.0 innings of work while racking up three strikeouts and scattering five hits. Dirtbags National was not short of offensive firepower, as Gaston and Lynn each collected one RBI and two runs scored off two hits apiece. Partin went 1-for-2 and drove in two runs for the Dirtbags. Brent Frosch led Texas Twelve at the plate, as he was 2-for-3 on the day with a pair of singles. Brody Smith and Jayden Morales each gathered a base hit in two at-bats for Texas.

2027 Texas Twelve will wrap up pool play with a 11:00 a.m. matchup against Top Tier Select on Field 4, while Dirtbags National will play its final game of the day against Team Elite at 11:00 a.m. on Field 3. KANGAROO COURT ROOS AMERICAN 8, DULINS DODGERS PRIME 0

Kangaroo Court Roos American (1-1) two-hit Dulins Dodgers Prime (1-1) to achieve the mercy rule victory in its second game of the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

With this victory, Kangaroo Court earns its first victory of the tournament with one remaining pool play game to play. 

Roos struck first, starting with a lead off single from Azariah Rhodes, followed by an error which got Jett Walters aboard. Both runs were cashed in on errors from the Dodgers. In the second, the Roos added two more, the first coming on a passed ball to score Takumi Yoshida, and the second came when Jett Walters held off the throw long enough for Rhodes to steal home. In the fifth, Elijah Lewis doubled to dead center to bring across Rhodes, who started the inning with a double of his own. The offense hit the gas in the sixth when Samir Mohammed singled to start the inning and an error put Yoshida aboard. It was the double from Jordan Cox that put the pressure on scoring two to bring the lead to seven. The final run of the mercy-rule victory came on a sacrifice fly from Rhodes to score Anthony Tenuto.

Mohammed no-hit the Dodgers through 5.2 innings, with Dulins Dodgers’ only two hits coming from Koen Isaacson and Mark Ramos with only one out to spare. Mohammed struck out five while only surrendering one walk. Kangaroo Court sprayed eight hits, including four extra base hits. Cox, Lewis, Rhodes, and Yoshida all doubled for the Roos. Rhodes was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Mohammed helped his own case by also going 2-for-3. Dodgers starter Tyler Scarborough took the loss going 4.2  innings giving up five runs, two earned, on six hits.

Kangaroo Court Roos American will face Wow Factor National 14U for its last pool play game of the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina at 10:45  a.m. on Field 2. STACKED BASEBALL 5, USA PRIME NATIONAL 3

Stacked Baseball (3-0) scored five runs across the first two innings en route to a 5-3 victory over USA Prime National (1-2) to close out pool play at the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina on Friday morning at Durham Athletic Park.

Stacked got on the board in the first inning on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. It added four more runs on as many hits to take a 5-0 lead in the second inning. Dylan Seward led off the frame with a triple to center field and scored on Parker Leoff’s single up the middle. After a Andrew Jiminez walk put runners at first and second, back-to-back doubled by Aiden Scout Escobedo and Taytum Reeves drove in a combined three runs.

An RBI groundout in the fourth inning followed by an RBI double by Cole Chambers and run-scoring single by Javorski Lane Jr. in the fifth gave USA Prime all three of its runs. In the sixth, USA Prime managed to put the game-tying run at the plate after M Lessard reached base on a double and moved to third on a fly out, but a groundout ended the threat.

Stacked Baseball’s Reeves led his team’s offense with a 2-for-3 outing with two RBIs, while USA Prime’s Chambers and Lane Jr. tallied two hits apiece and each drove in a run. On the mound, Stacked’s Jaxon Olmstead earned the win after tossing 4.1 innings and holding the opposition to three earned runs, while USA Prime’s Justin Osborne took the loss after surrendering five earned runs in 1.1 innings.

DIRTBAGS NATIONAL 14U 7, TEAM ELITE 3

A nine-run fifth inning led Dulins Dodgers Prime (2-1) past ZT Prospects National (2-1) in the final round of pool play in the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina. With this win, Dodger’s knocked off the previously undefeated ZT Prospects to earn its second win of the tournament.
ZT Prospects began the first inning with two singles from Carter Hadnot and Ayden Coleman, as well as a walk from Broder Katke to cash in its first run on a Jaden Estevez fielder’s choice. With no outs, Estevez and Max Lopez sent back-to-back singles to find some green while Adrian Rosales worked a walk. The walk to Luke Armijo would then force the second run across. With two outs, the third run came across when Lopez scored on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the fourth, Dulins Dodgers tied the ball game. Koen Isaacson led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch, and then three consecutive walks from Asher Strait, Landon Schmidt, and Hadley Levi Leathers forced a run. A sacrifice fly from Jackson Bernosky cut the deficit to one until a passed ball scored Schmidt to knot the game at three. In the fifth, Dodgers took the lead coming on two walks, a hit by pitch, a single from Maddox Hankins and a wild pitch to score Carson Branch. The lead was padded on a sacrifice fly from Reed Blakely to score Hankins, while back-to-back singles from Leathers and Bernosky brought the lead to five. It was the back-to-back doubles from Mark Ramos and Jaxon Knapp that scored a combined four runs to invoke the run-rule and end the game in five innings.

Isaacson earned the victory for the Dulins Dodgers, going 2.0 innings with no earned runs and three strikeouts. The victory came on the back of six hits from Dulins Dodgers, with four batters going 1-for-2. ZT Prospects also racked up six hits, with Enrique Max Lopez going 2-for-2.

ZT Prospects National and Dulins Dodgers Prime will await seeding moving into Saturday’s bracket play. DIRTBAGS NATIONAL 14U 7, TEAM ELITE 3

Dirtbags National 14U (2-1) showcased its relentless offense in a 7-3 rout of Team Elite (1-1-1) at the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

Scoring commenced first for Team Elite, as Sam Godbout’s RBI base hit plated Colt Babic, who reached on a double in the second inning. Dirtbags National gained the lead in its half of the second with a pair of runs with the first run coming off the bat of Hudson Tuttle and the second off Zachary Grogan scoring as the result of two consecutive hit-by-pitches. An error on Team Elite’s shortstop prolonged the third frame and allowed Brody Brannan to rip a two-out pitch to right for the Dirtbags’ third run. Grogan seized the opportunity to take advantage of two errors in the home half of the fifth with an RBI groundout. Dirtbags National continued to score in the sixth, as back-to-back singles by Holt Gaston and Judge Dillow gave the home team a 7-1 advantage going into the seventh. Team Elite showed signs of life in the seventh, however, as a wild pitch followed by JC Pacheco’s sacrifice fly made it a 7-3 contest.

Conner Horner set the tone for Dirtbags National, as he tossed 5.0 innings and conceded only one run in the process. Brannan scored and hit in a run for Dirtbags National in his 1-for-3 outing in addition to Dillow driving in a pair while going 1-for-4. Gaston went 1-for-3 and scored three times for the Dirtbags. Grindlinger notched a 2-for-3 performance for Team Elite, while Babic scored twice and went 1-for-2 with a stand-up double. Godbout crossed the plate once and hit in a run for Team Elite as he was 1-for-2 on the day.

TOP TIER SELECT 4, 2027 TEXAS TWELVE 2

Top Tier Select (2-1) finished pool play with a 4-2 victory over 2027 Texas Twelve (0-2-1) at the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

Texas Twelve put an early run on the board in the second, as James Obaldo singled to right to score Ross Milburn. In the third, a leadoff walk put Anthony Nottage on base for Xavier Perez to send one deep into right and pick up a standing RBI triple. John Louise followed suit and doubled on a line drive to deep right center to score Perez, making it a 3-0 ball game. Texas Twelve plated a runner in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Mason Hill to score Michael Vela. A seventh-inning rally for Texas Twelve added a run, but Top Tier sealed the 4-2 win to finish off pool play. 

Perez led Top Tier Select’s offense with a 2-for-3 day with a triple and an RBI. Louise was also strong at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Matt Richie started on the mound for Top Tier, going 6.0 innings strong with four strikeouts and only allowing one run.

Texas Twelve registered eight hits on the day, with Dillion Arriaga going 2-for-2 and Hill contributing the team’s only RBI. Brent Frosch was the starting pitcher for Texas Twelve, with a stellar two-inning performance where he struck out the six batters he faced.

KANGAROO COURT ROOS AMERICAN 8, WOW FACTOR 7

Carson Cocco went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs to lead Kangaroo Court Roos American (2-1) to an 8-7 victory over Wow Factor National (0-3) in the final round of pool play action at the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

After a scoreless first inning, Kangaroo Court took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second after Cocco sent a double to left field. Wow Factor responded in the third with seven runs in the third. Singles by Preston Matricardi and JB Upton scored three runs, before a triple from Maxwell Hemenway made it 5-2. A passed ball and a walk allowed the final two runs of the inning to come across and establish a 7-2 lead for Wow Factor. Kangaroo Court responded in a big way, plating four in the fifth thanks to doubles by Azariah Rhodes and Griffin Boesen and a Brennan Jones single. With the score sitting at 7-6, a groundout allowed the tying run to score in the bottom of the sixth for Kangaroo Court. A passed ball then sent in the winning run to score for Kangaroo Court and the game ended immediately after due to the 2:15 time limit.

In addition to a double, Boesen also picked up two RBIs to help lead the Kangaroo Court offense. Camden Boehm threw 3.2 innings and struck out three batters while allowing no runs. Matricardi contributed a 2-for-3 effort with two base hits and an RBI for Wow Factor National.

EAST COAST SOX SCOUT 3, PRD 2

East Coast Sox Scout (1-2) held off PRD (1-2) in its final game of pool play, 3-2, on Friday at the 14U National Team Championships North Carolina at Durham Athletic Park.

East Coast Sox plated the first two runs of the game in the second inning when Trent Buckley drove in Jacob Caruso and Ayden Bullock with a two-run triple to center field after both drew walks to reach base. PRD knotted the score in the third on Nathaniel Fuller’s RBI groundout followed by Brodie Campbell’s RBI single to center field. East Coast Sox plated what proved to be the game-winning run in the third when Stephen Bobo plated Curt Friedrich from third with a base hit to center field. In the sixth, PRD managed to put runners in scoring position, but a swinging strikeout ended the game. Due to the time limit, the contest ended in six innings.

Despite the loss, PRD’s Friedrich and Will Swisher tallied two hits apiece to lead all players in the game. East Coast Sox Scout’s Buckley was credited with the win after throwing the first three innings, while PRD’s Ryan Patraska took the loss after surrendering the game-winning run in the third inning.

CANES NATIONAL 14U 3, SBA NATIONAL 2027 1

Canes National 14U (2-0-1) scored two in the sixth to push past SBA National 2027 (1-2)  in the final game of pool play in the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina. With the win, Canes remain undefeated as it heads into bracket play Saturday. 

Jael Castillo’s RBI single led off the Canes, scoring Finn Moore who singled earlier in the inning. SBA tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on back-to-back singles from Carston Wedemeyer and Hayden Talmage. In the top of the sixth, Canes took the lead scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly from Jose Doubront and a double from Colton Christman. Canes hung on to maintain the lead and take the victory.

Canes National had seven hits in the ball game with extra-base hits from Christman and Carson Bruce. Caleb Hudson led the Canes offense, going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Hits for SBA came from four different players, with Talmadege credited with the only RBI on the day.

Canes starter Andrew Davis took the victory to the tune of 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts while only giving up one earned run. Tanner Williams earned the save with 2.0 scoreless innings of work.  SBA starter Colton Gallardo took the loss as he gave up three runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

Canes National and SBA National 2027 will await seeding moving into Saturday’s bracket play. ALPHA PRIME 6, UDACF 0

Bear Calvo went 1-for-1 with two runs scored to lead Alpha Prime (1-2-0) to a 6-0 victory over UDACF Evolution (1-1-1) in the final game of pool play at the 14U National Team Championships in North Carolina.

With the win, Alpha Prime secures its first victory of the tournament heading into bracket play.

After two scoreless innings to begin the game, Alpha Prime managed to take the lead in the third inning after William Cutshall, David Haggerty, and Noah Lemau each recorded singles that scored four total runs. Two more runs went up on the board for Alpha Prime thanks to an error and a sac fly by Chase Johnson. UDACF was able to find its way onto the scoreboard in the top of the seventh when Joseph DiMeo grounded into a double play that allowed a runner to score from third and establish a 6-1 score. Alpha Prime reliever Royal McKinney struck out his third batter of the game to secure the win for Alpha Prime.

Chase Johnson went 1-for-2 with a base hit, RBI, and a stolen base for Alpha Prime. Lemau threw the first five innings for Alpha Prime, striking out three batters and allowing no runs. Nicholas Mondesando and Jacob Carrasco each went 2-for-3 with two base hits to lead UDACF Evolution offensively.
