Phelps Goes Deep as Team USA Opens Summer League Tour With a Win

Tre Phelps’ homer highlights a five-run night for Team USA

CARY, N.C. - Team USA kicked off the Summer League Tour with a 5-2 win over the Coastal Plain League Select Team at Coleman Field on Saturday, with a solo shot from Tre Phelps (Georgia) one of five straight runs scored on the way to the win.

AS IT HAPPENED:

  • Coastal Plain Select (0-1) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI groundout and an RBI single.
  • Team USA (1-0) battled back to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, remaining disciplined at the plate to load the bases with no outs. Luke Stevenson (UNC) raked an RBI single into left to put the stars and stripes on the board for the first time and put the team within a run. Justin Lebron (Alabama) brought in the tying run after being hit by a pitch, and Team USA took a 3-2 lead on a deep sac fly from Gavin Grahovac in the fourth.
  • Kyle Johnson (Duke) earned the win, entering in the fourth inning and putting together a strong two-inning performance. Johnson fanned a game-high four batters and didn’t allow a hit during his shift while Team USA pulled in front at the plate.
  • Phelps blasted a massive solo home run 397 feet into left in the fifth inning, giving Team USA a two-run cushion. Phelps’ homer left his bat at 105 miles per hour.
  • The final Team USA run of the game came in the sixth inning on Grahovac’s second sac fly of the night.
  • Jacob Dudan (NC State) earned the save, closing out the final inning as he struck out a batter and Team USA turned a 6-4-3 double play thanks to the efforts of Lebron, Eric Becker (Virginia) and Henry Ford (Virginia).

NOTABLE STATS:

  • Team USA rang up 12 strikeouts, led by Johnson’s four. Jason DeCaro (UNC) punched out three batters in three innings of work, while both Matthew Matthijs (UNC) and Miller Green (Vanderbilt) went an inning and recorded a pair of punchouts.
  • Green, Johnson, and Matthijs did not allow any hits during their respective shifts.
  • Phelps led Team USA with a game-high two hits, while four batters recorded one hit on the night.
  • Grahovac’s two RBIs were also a game-high.
  • AJ Gracia (Duke) was the only player on the night to draw a pair of walks.

  • The Summer League Tour continues at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., on Sunday, June 30 as Team USA gears up to face off against the Coastal Plain League Select once again at 3:00 p.m. on Field No. 3.
