Schubart hits two homers, drives in four RBI

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Nolan Schubart (Oklahoma State) mashed a pair of homers and Derrick Smith (North Carolina State) locked down a tough save to give Team USA a 5-4 win in game one of the 21st USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series on Saturday, June 29 at Segra Stadium.

AS IT HAPPENED

  • Chinese Taipei (0-1) knocked back-to-back hits in the top of the first to start the scoring. Zheng Jun-Wei looped a double down the left field line, and was brought in by Tseng Yu-Ching to put CTBA ahead, 1-0.
  • Schubart belted a homer deep to center for Team USA (1-0) to level the game at 1-1, in the bottom of the second inning.
  • Brooks Bryan (Troy) pushed Team USA ahead, 2-1, on an RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Schubart crushed a three-run shot deep to left center for his second dinger of the day, and gave Team USA a four-run cushion at 5-1.
  • Chinese Taipei took advantage of an error in the top of the eighth to score three runs, and trim the lead down to one, at 5-4. Tseng earned two RBI on a double down the left field line, and Lai Chun hit a single to drive in the third run.
  • Chinese Taipei put the pressure on Team USA in the top of the ninth, and sent the tying run around third base on a single from Huang Bo-Rui, but Drew Burress (Georgia Tech) fired a laser home from center field to prevent the run from scoring.
  • Chinese Taipei went on to load the bases, but Smith was able to work out of the jam and earn the save to give Team USA a 5-4 victory in game one.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Schubart reached base in all five of his plate appearances with two homers, a double, and two walks, with one of those being an intentional free pass. He drove in four RBI and touched home twice with a 3.333 slugging percentage.
  • Team USA drew seven walks with two from Schubart, Burress, and Bryan.
  • Tseng collected three RBI for Chinese Taipei with one run scored in a two-hit performance.
  • Team USA fired 11 strikeouts, led by Patrick Forbes (Louisville) with five. Nelson Keljo (Oregon State) was the pitcher of record, and punched out two, along with Gabriel Gaeckle (Arkansas)
