Pitching Takes Center Stage in Final CNT Camp Game

Stars and Stripes combine for 23 strikeouts.

CARY, N.C. - The Stars and Stripes pitching staffs combined for 23 strikeouts, and the Stars took a 7-1 victory to close the Collegiate National Team Training Camp on Thursday night at Coleman Field.

AS IT HAPPENED:

  • The Stars (2-0) collected the first RBI of the evening as Devin Taylor (Indiana) drove in Anthony Martinez (UC Irvine) on a single to left field.
  • The Stripes (0-2) turned the first double play of the camp in the top of the fifth inning, with Justin Lebron (Alabama), Eric Becker (Virginia), and Daniel Cuvet (Miami) working in concert to end the frame.
  • Tre Phelps (Georgia) laced a double deep to right-center to lead off the bottom of the fifth, and he was brought in by Lebron.
  • Gabe Davis (Oklahoma State) shined on the mound when he struck out the side on 13 pitches in the bottom of the eighth.

NOTABLE STATS:

  • The Stars pitchers tallied 15 strikeouts, led by Davis who fanned the side. Matt Scott (Stanford), Kyson Witherspoon (Oklahoma), Tyler Bremner (UC Santa Barbara), Ben Jacobs (Arizona State), and Derrick Smith (North Carolina State) each struck out two.
  • The Stripes collected eight punchouts, with Luis Rodriguez (Alabama State), Brett Renfrow (Virginia Tech), and Pablo Torres (Bethune-Cookman) each notching a pair.
  • Max Belyeu (Texas) walked four times for the Stars, and Brooks Bryan (Troy) reached three times on free passes with two runs scored.
  • Nolan Schubart (Oklahoma State) knocked two hits with a double to join Phelps with an extra-base hit.
  • Jamal George (Alabama State) registered a pair of hits to lead the Stripes.
  • Speed was on display as there were a total of five stolen bases. Marek Houston (Wake Forest), Belyeu, Dean Curley (Tennessee), Drew Burress (Georgia Tech), and Becker each swiped a base.
  • George showed off his arm as he was able to catch a runner stealing in the second inning.

ON DECK:

The camp will split into two squads, and the players will prepare to compete in the International Friendship Series against Chinese Taipei and the Summer League Tour against Appalachian League and Coastal Plain League select rosters. The International Friendship Series will begin on Saturday, June 29 at Segra Stadium in Fayetteville, N.C. at 6:35 p.m., and the Summer League Tour will also kick off on Saturday at Coleman Field in Cary, N.C. at 5:30 p.m. against the Coastal Plain League Select.
