Team USA mashes six homers in five-game sweep

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - Brooks Bryan (Troy) lifted a grand slam to put an exciting capper on the 21st USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball Confederation to help Team USA to a 6-0 win, and a five-game sweep, on Wednesday, July 3 at Atrium Health Park.

AS IT HAPPENED

  • Team USA extended its string of consecutive innings without allowing a hit to 15, and 49 batters faced, before Tseng Yu-Ching broke through with a single into right field in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Nolan Schubart (Oklahoma State) broke the seal in the bottom of the fifth inning with a bases-clearing, two-RBI double down the right field line to drive in Danny Dickinson (West Richland, Wash.) and Drew Burress (Georgia Tech), and put Team USA in front, 2-0.
  • Bryan put an exclamation point on the series for Team USA when he lifted a grand slam down the left field line in the bottom of the eighth inning.
  • Malachi Witherspoon (Oklahoma) and Nate Snead (Tennessee) threw the final 2.1 innings without allowing a hit to help Team USA close out the series sweep.

NOTABLE STATS

  • With his two-RBI double, Schubart became the only player during the series to reach base in all five games. He finished the series with a .600 batting average, .818 on-base percentage, and a 1.400 slugging percentage. He knocked two doubles and two homers with seven RBI, and drew 12 walks to register a 2.218 OPS, and he was named series MVP.
  • Tucker Biven (Louisville) was electric in relief as he struck out five in 2.2 innings of work for Team USA.
  • Burress turned in a two-hit performance with a walk and two runs scored, and he was the lone batter to have a multi-hit night.
  • Burress and Dickinson each stole a base in the contest, and both picked up their third of the series.
  • Zheng Jun-Wei swiped his second bag of the series for Chinese Taipei during the game. Along with his .462 slugging percentage with two doubles, and two walks, he was named Most Outstanding Hitter of the series.
  • Huang Zi-Hao fanned five batters in five innings as the starter for Chinese Taipei.
  • Jamie Arnold (Florida State) was named Most Outstanding Pitcher of the series, in recognition of his seven strikeouts as the starter in Team USA’s complete game no-hitter in game four.
