Stars Open CNT Camp With Victory

Stars lift two homers to take first game, 9-5.

CARY, N.C. - The Stars and Stripes teams combined for 22 hits and 14 runs to open the Collegiate National Team Training Camp, and the Stars came away with a 9-5 win on Wednesday, June 26 at Coleman Field at the National Training Complex.

AS IT HAPPENED:

  • Steven Milam (Louisiana State) helped the Stripes set the tone early, as he picked up a leadoff walk to start the game. He was later driven in by Henry Ford (Virginia) on an RBI single to right field to put their squad ahead, 1-0.
  • Caden Bodine (Coastal Carolina) put the Stars on the board with an RBI groundout to bring the score to 2-1, with the Stripes leading after one.
  • After an error allowed the Stripes to extend the lead to 3-1, Brooks Bryan (Troy) rocketed the Stars in front on a three-run blast to left-center. The Stars tacked on one more after an error, and pushed the advantage to 5-3, through four frames.
  • The Stripes pulled the game back to level with a two-run homer of their own, off of the bat of Drew Burress (Georgia Tech) to left-center in the top of the sixth.
  • The Stars broke the deadlock in the bottom of the seventh on a dinger to right field by Anthony Martinez (UC Irvine), and eventually led 7-5, heading to the late innings.
  • Martinez capped off his day with a two-run double to right-center for his second extra-base hit and third RBI of the evening, and that sent the game to its final score.

NOTABLE STATS:

  • Drew Burress, Brooks Bryan, and Anthony Martinez each hit their first homer of the camp.
  • Martinez and Bryan each drove in three RBI, and Burress generated two.
  • Six players had two-hit nights: Ford, Daniel Cuvet (Miami), Devin Taylor (Indiana), Bodine, Danny Dickinson (Utah Valley), and Martinez.
  • Steven Milam and Marek Houston (Wake Forest) both drew a pair of walks.
  • The Stars pitching staff racked up 11 strikeouts, with three from Kolten Smith (Georgia), and two from Patrick Forbes (Louisville).
  • The Stripes tallied seven strikeouts, with two coming from Joey Volchko (Stanford) who started the day.
