Revisit USA Baseball and its history with number one overall picks in the MLB draft dating back to 1972. Over the past 47 years, there have been a total of 33 USA Baseball alums that were selected as the number one overall pick in the MLB Draft. This is a list of those athletes and their achievements in both their amatuer and professional careers.
Casey Mize (pictured) played on the 2017 Collegiate National Team. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2018 and recently threw a no-hitter for the Tigers AA affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves.
Royce Lewis played on the 2014 15U National Team and 2016 18U National Team. He was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 2017 and is currently playing for the Twins A affiliate, the Fort Myers Miracle.
Mickey Moniak played for the 2013 15U National Team and 2015 18U National Team. He was drafted in 2016 by the Philadelphia Phillies and is currently playing for the Phillies AA affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils.
Dansby Swanson played for the 2014 Collegiate National Team. Swanson made his MLB debut in 2016 and is now the starting shortstop for the Atlanta Braves.
Brady Aiken played for the 2010 14U National Team and the 2013 18U National Team. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in 2014 and is currently playing for the Cleveland Indians single A affiliate, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.
Mark Appel was on the 2011 Collegiate National Team. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in 2013. He last played for the Philidelphia Phillies AAA affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs
Gerrit Cole played for the 2009 and 2010 Collegiate National Teams. Cole was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011. He made his MLB debut in 2013 and was traded to the Houston Astros in 2018. Cole and is a two-time All-Star.
Bryce Harper was on the 2008 16U National Team and 2009 18U National Team. Harper was drafted by the Washington Nationals and has had an impactful career in the MLB thus far, earning the NL Rookie of the Year (2012), NL MVP (2015), Silver Slugger winner (2015) and is a six-time All-Star. He is currently playing for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Stephen Strasburg played for the 2008 Collegiate National Team and 2008 Olympic Team. Strasburg was drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2009. He is a three-time All-Star, NL Strikeout Leader (2014) and is in the 10th season of his career and is still pitching for the Nationals.
David Price played for the 2005 and 2006 Collegiate National Teams. Price was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2007. He is a six-time All-Star, AL Cy Young Award winner (2012), MLB Strikeout leader (2014) and World Series Champion (2018). He is currently in the 12th season of his career and plays for the Boston Red Sox.
Luke Hochevar was a part of the 2004 Collegiate National Team. He led the team in innings pitched (33.0), was second in strikeouts (38) and had a 2.73 ERA. Hochevar was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2006. He played his entire career with the Royals and helped them win a World Series in 2015.
Justin Upton was a member of the 2004 18U National Team. He led the 18U Team in home runs (10) and was second in batting average (.417). Upton was drafted by the 2005 Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005, is a four-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger Award winner and is in the 12th season of his career with the Los Angeles Angels.
Matt Bush played for the 2002 16U National Team and 2003 18U National Team. Bush was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2004 and was in the MLB for 3 seasons.
Delmon Young played for the 2000 16U National Team and 2002 18U National Team. Young was drafted in 2003 by the Tampa Bay Rays, spent 9 seasons in the MLB and won the ALCS MVP in 2012.
Bryan Bullington was a member of the 2001 Collegiate National Team. He was drafted in 2002 by the Pittsburgh Pirates and spent five seasons in the MLB before heading over to Japan to play in the Nippon Professional Baseball League.
Joe Mauer (pictured) was a part of the 1999 and 2000 18U National Team. He also played for the 2003 and 2013 Professional National Team. Mauer was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 2001. He is a six-time All-Star, AL MVP (2009) and the only catcher in MLB history to win three batting titles.
Pat Burrell was a member of the 1997 Collegiate National Team and led the team in home runs (12) and RBIs (42). He was drafted in 1998 by the Philadelphia Phillies and spent 11 years in the majors, winning two World Series, one with the Phillies (2008) and the other with the San Francisco Giants (2010). 
Matt Anderson was a member of the 1995 Collegiate National Team that won a gold medal at the National Baseball Conference World Series. Anderson was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1997 and spent seven seasons in the majors. 
Kris Benson played for the 1996 Collegiate National Team and the 1996 Olympic Team. Benson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates the same year. He played in the MLB for 11 seasons and for five different organizations.
Paul Wilson played for the 1993 Collegiate National Team and was drafted by the New York Mets in 1994. The RHP had a seven-season career in the MLB with the New York Mets, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Cincinnati Reds.
Alex Rodriguez (pictured) was a member of the 1992 18U National Team and the 2006 Professional National Team. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 1993. Rodriguez spent a total of 22 seasons in the MLB and is a 14-time All-Star, three-time AL MVP and World Series Champion (2009).
Paul Nevin was a three-time member of the Collegiate National Team, playing in 1990, 1991 and 1992. Nevin won the Golden Spikes Award in 1992 and was drafted by the Houston Astros the same year. He played in the MLB for 12 seasons and was an All-Star in 2001.
Chipper Jones is one of two players to play for USA Baseball after being drafted. He played for the 2006 and 2009 Professional National Team. Jones was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1990 and is an 8-time All-Star, World Series Champion (1995), NL MVP (1999) and inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame (2018).
Ben McDonald played for the 1988 Collegiate National Team and the 1988 Professional National Team that won an Olympic gold medal. McDonald won the Golden Spikes Award in 1989 and was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles the same year. He enjoyed a 8-year career in the MLB.
Andy Benes also played for the 1988 Collegiate National Team and the 1988 Professional National Team that won an Olympic gold medal. Benes was drafted by the San Diego Padres in '88, had a 13-year career in the majors and threw out the first ever pitch for the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.
Ken Griffey Jr. (pictured) is one of two players to play for USA Baseball after being drafted. Griffey Jr. was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 1987 and was a member of the 2006 Professional National Team that competed in the World Baseball Classic that year. He is a 13-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove Award winner and member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame (2016).
Jeff King played for the 1985 Collegiate National Team and led the team with a .378 batting average and 53 hits over 33 games. King was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986, played in the majors for 10 seasons and is one of five players to hit two home runs in one inning.
BJ Surhoff played for the 1983 and 1984 Collegiate National Teams, as well as the 1984 Olympic Team that won a silver medal. Surhoff went on to be drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1985. He played every position but pitcher during his 18-year career. 
Tim Belcher played for the 1983 Collegiate National Team and was drafted by the Minnesota Twins the same year. Belcher enjoyed a 14-year career in the MLB and was The Sporting News Rookie Pitcher of the Year in 1988.
Mike Moore was a member of the 1980 Collegiate National Team that went 5-1 over a six-game stretch against Japan. Moore was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 1981 but eventually pitched for the Oakland Athletics, who went on to win the 1989 World Series in a four-game sweep over the San Francisco Giants.
Bob Horner (pictured) played for the 1976 Collegiate National Team and won the Golden Spikes Award in 1978. He went on to be drafted by the Atlanta Braves that same year. Horner had a 10-season career in the majors and was a rare talent that never spent a day in the minor leagues.
Floyd Bannister played for the 1975 Collegiate National Team and was the second alum to be selected number one overall. Bannister was selected by the Houston Astros and ended up playing for six major league teams over a 15-season career.
Dave Roberts was a member of the 1970 Collegiate National Team and was the first ever USA Baseball alum to be picked number one overall in 1972. Roberts played in the MLB for 10 seasons.
