Team Grey Collects 10-3 Win Over Team Light Blue in 2024 18U National Team Training Camp Opener

Ty Peeples crushed a two-run homer in the third inning to help Team Grey top Team Light Blue, 10-3, in the opening game at the 2024 18U National Team Training Camp held at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Angel Cervantes put forth a strong showing for Team Light Blue to open up the contest, notching five strikeouts in two innings of work on the mound.
  • Team Grey went on a rally in the top of the third inning, scoring four runs which was capped off by a Ty Peeples two-run shot that traveled 401 feet to right center field.
  • After registering a single, Team Light Blue’s Sean Gamble made his way around the bases and came home on a double steal to move the score to 4-1.
  • Ethan Holliday extended Grey’s lead to 6-1 with his two-run RBI single through the left side in the top of the fifth frame. He would later cross the plate himself on a bases-loaded walk to give Team Grey a six-run advantage.
  • Team Grey struck again in the sixth inning and pushed its lead to 9-1 thanks to a Thomas Brown RBI single. Brown scored later in the inning on an infield error.
  • Team Light Blue tallied its second run of the day courtesy of a Brady Harris sacrifice fly which cut the deficit to seven runs.
  • With international tiebreaker rules in effect in the eighth inning, RJ Holmes plated a run for Grey to take a 10-2 advantage.
  • Light Blue also took advantage of the international tiebreaker rules; it also notched a run to round out the game with a final score of 10-3.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Despite the loss, Light Blue starting pitcher Cervantes registered five strikeouts on the bump in two innings.
  • Holliday and Peeples tied for a game-best two RBIs while also scoring three runs combined for Team Grey.
  • Grey’s Alex Barr tossed two innings of scoreless baseball, registering four strikeouts while also not allowing a hit.

Late-Game Theatrics Push Team Navy, Team Red to 3-3 Tie

The second game of the 2024 18U National Team Training Camp was full of action at the plate, seeing Navy’s Xavier Neyens slap a home run early and a late-game comeback from Team Red. The two squads walked away with a tie in their first contest at Training Camp.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Xavier Neyens started out the game with a bang, cranking a 440-foot home run in the top of the first inning to put Team Navy up 1-0.
  • Team Red’s middle infield duo of Steele Hall and Eli Willits turned a crucial double play in the top of the third inning to keep Navy off of the board.
  • Coy James drove in Team Red’s first run and evened the score at one with his RBI single to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • Red scored the go-ahead run to take a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the seventh frame via Josiah Hartshorn sneaking home on a wild pitch.
  • Jaden Fauske tacked on another run for Team Red, crossing the plate on a Brayden Jaksa sacrifice fly.
  • Team Navy responded with two runs in the top of the eighth thanks to a Josh Hammond two-run single to left field which would lock in a final score of 3-3.

NOTABLE STATS

  • Navy’s Hammond collected a game-high two RBIs in the contest while also working two scoreless innings on the bump.
  • Ethan Porter worked two innings on the mound for Team Red, registering two strikeouts while not allowing a single run.
  • Fauske and Luke Billings stayed patient at the plate and notched two walks apiece which was good for a game best.
