Day 2 NHSI Consolation Roundup

Consolation action began on Thursday at the 2025 National High School Invitational (NHSI) presented by the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance and Netting Pros. Catch up on all the action!

La Mirada 6, Poly Prep 2 (BOX SCORE)

La Mirada (La Mirada, Calif.) picked up its third win in program history and first of the week with a 6-2 victory over Poly Prep (Brooklyn, N.Y.). The Matadores got on the board first in the second inning with Travis Friend’s 2-RBI double, but the Blue Devils cut their deficit to one on Felix Heller’s RBI single in the third. La Mirada responded in the bottom frame with a run, making it 3-1, when Ian Nunez roped a line drive single to left. Poly Prep once again made it a one-run game in the fourth on Aidan Colasante’s RBI single, but La Mirada added some insurance in their half of the inning with three runs on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch, RBI single, and sac fly. Relief pitcher Nathaniel Maltonado, who allowed just one hit across three innings, managed to not allow a Poly Prep batter to reach base the rest of the game to give his team the victory. Heller, Nunez, and Friend tallied multiple hits in the contest, while Friend led all players with two RBIs.

Casteel 9, Edwardsville 2 (BOX SCORE)

Casteel (Queen Creek, Ariz.) come out firing on all cylinders right from the start to earn a 9-2 win over Edwardsville (Edwardsville, Ill.) in its first consolation game of the week. The Colts jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning, which was highlighted by Baylor Denny’s 2-RBI double, Dallas Hairston’s bases-clearing double, and Andres Armenta’s two-run single. After two quiet innings, the Colts tacked on a run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings, but not before the Tigers got on the board with a pair of runs on a bases-loaded walk and outfield single. Denny led all players with two hits and Hairston led all players with three RBIs in the contest, while Taylor Dodd picked up the win on the bump after tossing two scoreless innings in relief.

Granada 1, Holly Springs 0 (BOX SCORE)

Granada defeated Holly Springs (Holly Springs, N.C.) 1-0 to pick up its first-ever win at the NHSI. Its only run of the contest came in the fourth inning when Chase Nadeau drove in Peyton Richards on a sacrifice fly. Tyler Kennedy and Connor Raridan combined for the shutout on the mound, as Kennedy fanned nine batters across 5.2 innings and Raridan was credited with the save after tossing 1.1 hitless innings with four strikeouts. Granada’s Tommy Brown and Carlos Hernandez and Holly Springs’ Liam McNierney led all players at the plate with two hits.

The Stony Brook School 12, Wesleyan Christian Academy 1 (BOX SCORE)

The Stony Brook School Bears (Stony Brook, N.Y.) handed Wesleyan Christian Academy (High Point, N.C.) a 12-1 loss on the second day of the NHSI in a run-rule six-inning contest. With the win, the Bears claimed their first victory at the NHSI in school history. Throughout the game, The Stony Brook School fired rallies at the plate, including a four-run outburst in the top of the sixth frame. Mateo Lopez led the Bears at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs thanks to two singles and a triple. While Lopez led the offense, it was Leo Vitarelli who kept Wesleyan at bay. Vitarelli pitched a complete game, allowing a single run and striking out five.
