Olympian and past Golden Spikes Award winner Stephen Strasburg will return to Cary as a pitching coach for the 18U National Team Training Camp. A member of the 2008 Collegiate National Team which earned a bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Beijing, Strasburg transformed into one of the best collegiate pitchers in the country during his time at San Diego State (2006-2009). He broke the record for lowest career ERA (1.59), most wins in a season (13), as well as most strikeouts in a single game (23), in a season, (195), and in a career (375). Thanks to his efforts on the bump, Strasburg was named a consensus first team All-America selection and Mountain West Pitcher of the Year in 2008 and 2009, and won the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, the Dick Howser Trophy, and College Baseball Foundation’s National Pitcher of the Year award in 2009. Following his collegiate career, he was the first overall pick of the 2009 MLB Draft to the Washington Nationals where he put together an illustrious 13-year career. With the Nationals, he was a three-time All-Star selection (2012, 2016, 2017), won the Silver Slugger Award in 2012, led the National League in strikeouts with 242, and was named to the All-MLB First Team and the World Series MVP in 2019 after helping the franchise win its first-ever World Series title and leading the NL with 18 wins that year.
