Day 4 NHSI Consolation Roundup

Christopher Columbus 3, Corona del Sol 2 (BOX SCORE)

Christopher Columbus (Miami, Fla.) wrapped up its four-game slate at the 2025 NHSI with a nail-biting victory over Corona del Sol (Tempe, Ariz.). Despite dropping, Corona del Sol was the first squad to light up the scoreboard after Ben Jacobus found his way home with the help of a failed pickoff attempt. Robbie Oyarzun tied the match for Corona when he thwacked an RBI single to right field in the bottom of the second frame. With the score tied at one run each, Jacobus made his presence felt again by moving runners around the base via a single, which ultimately helped his side take a 2-1 lead thanks to a throwing error. Shortly after, Columbus pushed the game back into a tie, moving the momentum into their side’s favor. With tensions high, Max Alvarez plated the winning run with a sacrifice fly to deep center field. Now with a 3-2 lead, Columbus brought on Danny Castillo in relief to shut things down. Castillo needed only 13 pitches to strike out three-straight batters to help Columbus take the win. With the win, the Explorers finish their 2025 NHSI campaign with a 3-1 overall record.

Corona 3, Poly Prep 1 (BOX SCORE)

After being held off the scoreboard for the first 6.2 innings of the game by Poly Prep (Brooklyn, N.Y.) starter Miguel Sime Jr., Corona (Corona, Calif.) briefly tied it before taking a 3-1 lead and hanging on to win by that score in consolation action on Saturday. Trailing by a run and down to its final two outs, Corona got a one-out knock up the middle from Trey Ebel to kickstart a rally. A ground out advanced Ebel to scoring position but put Corona an out away from its second loss of the tournament. However, Anthony Murphy came to the plate and delivered the tying run with his third hit of the day, a ground ball single up the middle. A walk and wild pitch then put two runners in scoring position, setting the table for Brady Ebel to rope a two-run single up the middle to give Corona the 3-1 lead it would go on to win by. Poly Prep only picked up three hits and was held off the scoreboard after a first-inning run on a wild pitch. Jason Gerfers started for the Panthers and tossed five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six. Billy Carlson entered in relief and got the win with two hitless frames and three strikeouts. Sime Jr. suffered the tough-luck loss; he struck out seven in 6.2 innings, hitting triple-digits on the radar gun with a 100-mph fastball in the sixth. Corona finishes the week 3-1 with today’s victory.

Granada 11, Regis Jesuit 2 (BOX SCORE)

Granada (Granada, Calif.) closed out NHSI play with an 11-2 win over Regis Jesuit (Aurora, Colo.). Five of Granada’s six runs came in the first inning, as it capitalized on wary pitching and defensive miscues by Regis Jesuit. After a wild pitch and passed ball plated the first two runs, an RBI single by Jack Badger and two-run error brought the final three across. Regis Jesuit responded in the bottom frame with a pair of runs to cut its deficit to three, as Chase Massey’s RBI double to left field and an error on a fielder’s choice got the Raiders on the board. Granada tacked on a run in the third inning thanks to Joey Marasco’s sac fly to left field, then exploded for five more on three hits in the seventh on doubles by Tommy Brown and Marasco and an RBI single by Chase Nadeau. Peyton Richards led all players with three hits and two RBIs, while Logan Robinson, Joe Wiser, and Connor Raridan combined for five shutout innings in relief.

La Mirada 7, Holly Springs 3 (BOX SCORE)

A four-run seventh inning lifted La Mirada (La Mirada, Calif.) past Holly Springs (Holly Springs, N.C.), 7-3, on the fourth and final day of the 2025 NHSI. Phillip Webb and Maverek Russell handed La Mirada an early three-run advantage after an RBI-single and two-RBI base knock, respectively. In the third inning, Hodge Williams put Holly Springs on the board with a run-producing base hit through the left side while Tyler Dowler tacked on one more for the Hawks. Noah Rhoades came up clutch for Holly Springs in the fifth frame with a game-tying, RBI-triple. A single by Win Gurney followed by an error handed La Mirada a 5-3 advantage early in the seventh. Jesse Colon and Aaron Sykes each tallied RBIs later that frame to make it a 7-3 final score. Colon posted a fantastic performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Russell picked up a pair of hits and RBIs apiece. Holly Springs' Williams and Anthony Zezza each logged two hits in today's contest while their starter Caleb Renn hurled 6.0 innings. La Mirada concludes the 2025 NHSI with a 2-1 record while Holly Springs finishes 0-4.

Huntington Beach 6, Edwardsville 3 (BOX SCORE)

Huntington Beach (Huntington Beach, Calif.) capped off its eighth NHSI appearance with a 6-3 win over Edwardsville (Edwardsville, Ill.). The Oilers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, as a wild pitch and bases-loaded walk put the first two runs on the board and then Jared Grindlinger’s 2-RBI single doubled the lead. Grindlinger led all players at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs.The Tigers got on the board in the third when Joseph Chiarodo drove in Hunter Baugh from second on a single to center field, but the Oilers answered with sacrifice flies in the fourth and fifth innings. The Tigers looked to rally in the latter innings, bringing in a run on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the sixth and a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded in the seventh, but relief pitcher Jared Marchbank sent the final batter of the game down swinging to collect the save.

Casteel 8, Wesleyan Christian Academy 3 (BOX SCORE)

Casteel (Queen Creek, Ariz.) got off to a good start in its fourth game at the NHSI. The Colts put up five quick runs in the bottom of the first frame, kick-started by a run scored via an error and a Baylor Denny RBI double. USA Baseball alum Ryan Harwood added some insurance with a hard-hit RBI single, allowing Denny to trot around the base path and score. Casteel tacked on an additional three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to eight runs. In a last ditch effort, Wesleyan began to put the pieces together on offense and chip away at the lead. Mikey Papciak scored on a wild pitch which was followed shortly after with a Nick Papciak two-RBI single. Despite scoring three quick runs, the comeback was short-lived and the Casteel Colts walked away with the win. Casteel finishes its 2025 NHSI run with a 3-1 record while outpacing opponents 39-16.

The Stony Brook School 3, Collierville 1 (BOX SCORE)

The Stony Brook School (Stony Brook, N.Y.) closed out NHSI play with a 3-1 victory over Collierville (Collierville, Tenn.) to earn its second win of the event. Run-scoring doubles by Julian Martinez and Anthony DeCesare in the first and fourth innings, respectively, plated all three of the Bears’ runs. In the fourth inning, the Dragons strung together three consecutive hits to bring in its lone run of the game. Hayden Short and JD Whitworth led off the side with hits, and Preston Sumner drove in Short with a single. Nick Parker tossed a complete game to help the Bears earn the win, as he surrendered one earned run and fanned seven batters.

Wesleyan Christian Academy 10, La Mirada 0 (BOX SCORE)

Wesleyan Christian (High Point, N.C.) scored multiple runs in three different innings en route to a 10-0 win over La Mirada (La Mirada, Calif.) to close out NHSI play. Cole Bowman, Josh Hammond, and Nick Papciak led the way offensively for the Trojans, as Papciak tallied four hits and Bowman and Hammond had three apiece to combine for 10 of the team’s 12 hits in the game. Papciak, alongside Will Gaynor, who was credited with the win, combined for six shutout innings on the mound. Bowman was responsible for the first three runs of the contest, as he drove in two on a triple to left field and then scored on a wild pitch in the first inning. Papciak made it 4-0 in the second inning with his RBI double, and then in the fourth the Trojans strung together three consecutive hits to extend their lead to 7-0. Three more runs scored in the sixth thanks to an RBI triple by Hammond and run-scoring singles by Bowman and Papciak.
