GREENSBORO, N.C. - Jamie Arnold (Florida State), Tyler Bremner (UC Santa Barbara), and Alton Davis II (Georgia) chilled the Chinese Taipei bats as they worked together to throw a combined no-hitter in a 9-0 victory for Team USA on Tuesday, July 2 at First National Bank Field in Greensboro, N.C.
It was the first no-hitter thrown by the Collegiate National Team since July 1, 2015, when the U.S. held Cuba hitless in a 2-0 win thrown by Tanner Houck, A.J. Puk, and Ryan Hendrix at the National Training Complex.
AS IT HAPPENED
- Team USA (4-0) immediately put a crooked number on the scoreboard, with four runners touching home in the first inning. Nolan Schubart (Oklahoma State) scored on a wild pitch after getting aboard with a walk, and Max Belyeu (Texas) brought home Dean Curley (Tennessee) on a single. Devin Taylor (Indiana) picked up the final RBI of the inning on a single, and the stars and stripes took advantage to seize a 4-0 lead after the first.
- Team USA tacked on two more runs on a two-run dinger down the left field line by Caden Bodine (Coastal Carolina) to send the U.S. ahead, 6-0, in the fifth inning.
- Team USA cashed in three more runs in the top of the sixth with a pair of RBI singles from Schubart and Belyeu, and moved the score to 9-0.
- Davis II was sturdy on the mound in the final two innings, and Belyeu caught a tailing line drive near the right field line for the final out of the no-hitter.
NOTABLE STATS
- Team USA twirled 14 combined strikeouts between three pitchers to complete the historic feat. Arnold led the way with seven strikeouts through the first four innings, Bremner followed with four punchouts in three innings, and Davis II fanned three in the final two frames.
- The stars and stripes were active once again on the basepaths, as Belyeu swiped four, and Bodine nabbed one. Belyeu stole two bases during one trip around the bases in the sixth inning.
- Schubart walked three more times, and reached base a total of four times, with an RBI single and two runs scored.
- Belyeu and Bodine each drove in two runs for Team USA. Belyeu collected two walks and touched home three times, while Bodine walked once with one run added.
