Team USA Falls to Appy League East Select

Solid outings from Brett Renfrow, Liam Peterson not enough as Team USA drops 4-3 contest to Appy League East Select

PULASKI, Va. - Team USA dropped a late contest by a final score of 4-3 to Appy League East Select on Monday night at Calfee Park despite the efforts of Brett Renfrow (Virginia Tech) and Liam Peterson (Florida) on the mound.

AS IT HAPPENED:

  • Team USA broke through offensively in the top of the third inning as Zion Rose (Louisville) drilled a single up the middle for the first hit of the game and was advanced into scoring position when Jamal George (Alabama State) drew a walk. Rose executed a perfect steal of third, putting himself in position to score on a deep sac fly from Kyle Johnson (Duke) to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead.
  • Appy League East Select answered to take the lead with a two-run homer in the top of the third inning from Austen Jaslove.
  • Rose scored again in the top of the fifth inning, reaching on a fielder’s choice before advancing into scoring position on a wild pitch. George stepped to the plate and lasered a line drive into right, allowing the speedy Rose to race home and tie the game at 2-2.
  • Gavin Grahovac showcased his speed in the top of the sixth inning by advancing all the way from first to third on a defensive error following a fly out, putting himself in perfect position to put Team USA ahead 3-2 on an RBI single from Henry Ford (Virginia).
  • Peterson entered in the fifth and dazzled on the mound, shutting down Appy League East Select over four innings. Peterson was lights-out, racking up seven strikeouts and allowing a single base runner to preserve Team USA’s 3-2 lead going into the ninth inning.
  • Appy League East rallied in the final inning, putting two runners aboard on a walk and a single. A wild pitch scored the tying run, and an RBI single driven into right handed Appy League East the walkoff win.

NOTABLE STATS:

  • Renfrow started on the mound for Team USA, going the opening two innings. Renfrow kept the Appy League East batters guessing in a hitless shift, notching a pair of strikeouts.
  • Peterson’s seven strikeouts in four innings matched Joey Volchko’s (Stanford) tally over the same span from Sunday’s win over the CPL Select.
  • Ford has now recorded a hit in all three Summer League Tour games for the U.S.
  • Rose, George, and AJ Gracia (Duke) tallied their first hits of the tour on Monday night.
  • The U.S. lineup drew seven free passes, the most in a Summer League Tour game so far. Grahovac and Eric Becker (Virginia) both walked twice to lead all players.
  • Team USA also swiped three bases, another Summer League Tour high. Each of Becker, Grahovac, and Rose were able to advance on steals.
