Team White Opens the First Day of Games at the 16U/17U NTDP with a Win, While Team Navy Storms Back Late Against Team Red

First day of NTDP games complete at the National Training Complex.

CARY, N.C. - The first day of games at the 2024 National Team Development Program are complete. Team White opened the slate by defeating the Canadian Junior National Team in nine innings, while the nightcap between Team Red and Team Navy ended in a 4-4 tie. a 4-4 tie.

AS IT HAPPENED:

  • Following a leadoff single from Nathaneal Davis in the bottom of the first inning, CJ Weinstein crushed a home run 361 feet over the right field wall for a 2-0 U.S. lead.
  • Team White starter Colemon Borthwick racked up four strikeouts during three innings of work. In the top of the third inning, Borthwick’s fourth punchout, followed by catcher Teagan Scott catching a Canadian runner trying to swipe second, ended the frame.
  • Team White added a third run in the bottom of the third inning as Cole Dunlap reached home on a sac fly from Cason Fletcher.
  • The Canadian Junior National Team put its first run on the board in the top of the fourth inning, loading the bases with three straight walks before Anthony Clavet lined a sac fly into center to score Dante Smith.
  • Team White loaded the bases themselves in the bottom of the fourth inning, answering to make it 4-1 thanks to Scott advancing home on a wild pitch.
  • Weinstein drove in his third RBI of the game in the fifth inning, raking a double into left to score Davis once again.
  • The Canadian Junior National Team surged back to within a run in the top of the sixth inning, plating three runs to cut the lead to 5-4. Clavet added two more RBIs to his tally by lining a single into center, and Leo Cote followed with an RBI single to right field.
  • A fielding error allowed Kevin Roberts to score Team White’s sixth run of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth inning,
  • Tyler Kenast and Marcus Greis closed out the final two innings for Team White, combining to retire four batters and allow just two hits. Greis earned the save after a shutdown final inning.

NOTABLE STATS:

  • Davis led all players with three hits, scoring twice and adding an RBI. Weinstein was the only other player to tally more than a hit, notching two.
  • Canada’s Smith and Team White’s Will Brick both drew a pair of walks.
  • Weinstein and Clavet led all players with three RBIs apiece.
  • Borthwick’s four strikeouts led all players, earning him the win. Canada’s William Labonte was saddled with the loss.

TEAM RED 4, TEAM NAVY 4

AS IT HAPPENED:

  • Team Navy’s Brody Bumila was electric on the mound over the opening 2.2 innings, posting five strikeouts and holding Team Red to just one hit.
  • Hunter Harrington scored the opening run of the game for Team Red in the fourth inning, racing home from second, after reaching on a double, thanks to an RBI single from Tyler Spangler.
  • Another double in the fourth inning, this time from Hogan Nelson, sent Spangler home to make it 2-0. Nelson would reach all the way to third on the throw, which allowed him to score on a Blake Bowen sac fly.
  • Judson Dowell gave Team Red a 4-0 lead thanks to a wild pitch and a defensive error in the fifth inning.
  • Team Red’s first three pitchers combined to allow just four hits over the first six innings. Tucker Long (2.0 IP) and Sammy Swank (2.0 IP) posted a pair of strikeouts, while Ethan Wheeler (2.0 IP) struck out four in his time on the bump.
  • Dylan Minnatee slashed a double into center to begin the seventh and final inning, scoring Navy’s first run of the game thanks to Alex Harrington tallying the team’s second straight double.
  • A wild pitch allowed Alex Harrington to score and cut the lead to 4-2.
  • Ezra Essex roped an RBI double into center field to send Team Navy’s third run home. The inning was eventually rolled, and with Essex on second that meant Navy had tied the game at 4-4.
  • Navy’s Gary Gibson II (2.0 IP) and Manny Lantigua (1.0 IP) closed the game, combining for four strikeouts over three hitless innings.

NOTABLE STATS:

  • Team Navy had three batters turn in a game-high two hits apiece; Jorvorskie Lane Jr., Minnatee, and Alex Harrington. Both of Lane Jr.’s hits went for extra bases, which led all players.
  • Alex Harrington and Essex tallied RBIs for Navy, while Spangler, Nelson, and Bowen drove in runs for Team Red.
  • Team Red had five players notch a hit, with both Hunter Harrington and Nelson hitting for extra bases.
  • Team Red’s Jack Woda drew a game-high two walks.
  • Bumila’s five strikeouts were a game-high, while both Navy’s Hudson Alpert and Red’s Wheeler fanned four batters during their respective shifts.

  • USA Baseball utilizes a modified scoring system for its development programs to achieve load management and mitigate potential injuries due to overuse for its youth athletes. Pitchers are subject to a maximum pitch count of 25 per inning during game play. In the event an inning is rolled because a pitcher has reached their maximum pitch count, runners on base may be contributed to the game score. As a result of this system, the final game score may not match the overall statistics.
