Chase Burns became the Demon Deacons’ single-season strikeout record holder with 169 punchouts in 14 appearances this season.
The righty fanned a career-high 16 against Clemson, one of the 11 times in 14 starts this season he struck out at least 10 batters and second time he finished with at least 15 punchouts. He improved to 10-1 as the Deacs have won all but two of his 14 starts.
In 241 1/3 career innings pitched, Burns has struck out 386 career batters. The righty finished last season ranked third nationally with 14.3 K/9 and currently sits at 17.1 K/9 through 14 starts.
Burns’ 386 career strikeouts leads South Carolina’s Ty Good (341 career strikeouts) by 45 strikeouts as the active Division I baseball strikeout leaders.
The righty also ranks second in strikeouts-per-nine among active career players, sitting at 14.39 after his May 17 start.
